How the hell do you nail down a continent
like Australia in photographs? Give me a
thousand technicolour pages and every
photographer who has ever lived and
it would seem impossible yet to try to
capture the edges, even, of this wild and
captivating landscape.
When I’m going through photographs,
selecting what ends up in the magazine
and what, maybe, never sees the light of
day, there’s no checklist; no discernable
metric for what separates a good shot from
a great shot. You just learn to feel them, to
sense when they affect you. You become
supersensitive to the collective effect of
colour, balance, light, line, impact.
And sometimes, very rarely, but some-
times, one just hits you in the chest like a
freight train. And you glimpse what lies
above, for what feels like the rst time.
Every road trip has a kind of life cycle, there is the packing, the driving, the unpacking...the
weird people, the adventures... But before all of that comes the point where you idle over
a paper map, drink in one hand, sense of adventure in the other, and you begin to trace
the landscape, deciding where you’re going to head, what is possible, and how far you can
stretch yourself, your equipment, your 4WD. This is one of my favourite moments in that
life cycle, a moment pregnant with possibility, wavering in between the idea and reality...
anything can happen. This is where dreaming of life becomes living the dream.
