my family was always welcomed
with an annual trip to a strawberry
farm outside Stellenbosch. We’d all
bundle out of the kombi, kitted out
in sun hats and oversized Mad Dogs
T-shirts, and slowly make our way
through the strawb vines, plucking
only the biggest, juiciest, reddest
ones. For days, weeks even, we’d
discover new ways of using all
our fresh fare. Jam, fruit salad,
chocolate-covered berries – you
name it, we made it.
Admittedly, it was strawberry
season and the fridges at the Spar
down the road were overflowing
with them too. But nothing beats
the excitement and satisfaction
of enjoying the fruits of your
own labour.
That’s why this issue – the very
first all-vegetarian Harvest Issue

  • is like one big, plump strawberry
to me. We are focusing on all the
    fresh, seasonal fruit and veggies,
showing you how to turn them into
delicious dishes; or, if you fancy
    yourself quite the gardener, how
to grow your own (and then turn
    them into delicious dishes).
    As for those strawberries, they
make an appearance in a tasty trio
of quick and easy breakfast, lunch
    and dinner recipes.
I may even have resurrected my
    Mad Dogs tee in celebration...

‘I am a mother of two
living with my mother,
and she is the one who has
subscribed to MyKitchen.
When I saw Issue 34, I was
really bowled over. I grew
up eating some of those
soups. What I liked most is
that even our own proudly
local foods like chakalaka
and vetkoek were included.
For someone like me who
doesn’t have creativity in
cooking, you helped me a
lot. Keep it up – this issue
kept me glued to the stove.’
