o doubt about it: 2017 has been
huge for Emma Stone. After all,
it’s the year she added ‘Oscar
winner’ to her list of credentials,
taking out the Best Actress
gong for her role in La La
Land. ‘I don’t know that anything internally
has changed,’ she says of her win, in her
trademark husky voice. ‘It was such a huge
honour, but is still super surreal and strange.’
In August, Emma also stoked rumours
of a possible reunion with her ex-boyfriend
Andrew Garfield when she attended the final
performance of his play Angels in America.
Although she insists she’s currently single,
the 28-year-old still refers to her former
flame as ‘someone I still love very much.’
After hanging up her dancing shoes
following La La Land’s epic success, the
multifaceted star had to learn a brand new
skill for her flick Battle of the Sexes. Created by
the team behind Little Miss Sunshine, the film
is based on the real-life contest between tennis
champion Billie Jean King (played by Emma)
and her notoriously sexist counterpart Bobby
Riggs (played by Steve Carell).

Billie Jean won a record 20
Wimbledon championships over
her career. ‘No pressure at all,’ jokes
Emma, who saw her first live tennis
event when the pair visited the US Open
this year. ‘She was catching and throwing
balls,’ Emma recalls. ‘I was like, “This
is like the easiest shit to you”...
to be throwing a ball. But
that alone took me
months to learn.’

‘She’s the
nicest person.
She’s a great
actor, obviously.
So, it’s fun.’
Along with
spending countless
hours on the court,
Emma also gained 7kg of
muscle to get the look of an
athlete. Her trainer Jason Walsh
says the star ‘smiled from ear to ear’
when she reached her goal. ‘She was like, “Hell
yeah, I can’t believe my body’s doing this!”’
No stranger to changing up her appearance
for roles, the usually redheaded Emma recently
switched to platinum blonde for upcoming
TV series Maniac, in which she teams up
with old pal Jonah Hill. But while she’ll adapt
her look for a role, Emma refuses to succumb
to Hollywood ideals of beauty. ‘You live once

CRAZY, STUPID,
LOVE REUNION?
While Steve says it was fun reuniting with Emma
for Battle of the Sexes he believes he can go one
better... by making a movie with Emma and their
other Crazy, Stupid, Love co-star Ryan Gosling!
‘I hope the three of us get to work together
again,’ Steve confirms. ‘They are, incidentally, two
of the nicest people ever.’ Um, we hope so too!
‘We got top of the list right down
the line in terms of casting,’
producer and star Steve says of
the Crazy, Stupid, Love cast,
which also included Marisa
Tomei and Julianne Moore
