Retro queen
From Gangster Squad’s ’40s glamour to
permed glory of the ’80s, Emma has a knack for Maniac’s
slipping seamlessly between decades. For
of the Sexes, Emma reunited with Battle^
costume designer Mary Zophres. ‘We wrapped La La Land
La La Land in October and started prepping^
Battle in February and [Emma] was starting to
bulk up,’ Mary recalls. ‘She would put something
on and we’d laugh between each other. Just to see
the transformation of her was really interesting.’
The ’70s polyester also proved a challenge. ‘It’s
just a lot of sweat and stuff,’ Emma confesses.
‘[The book] was just
so incredibly helpful
because I didn’t know
too many people who
were 23 in 1963,’ Emma
says of getting into
character for the film
adaption of The Help

director Woody Allen on his
1920s-era flick Magic in the
Moonlight. ‘It was hugely
intimidating,’ she admits
