Chanel’s glamorous life aquatic

G

abrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel pretty much invented
nautical chic. There’s a famous 1920s
photograph of her in a pair of belted men’s
trousers and a classic Breton-striped
T-shirt. Except it wasn’t a fashion classic
until she made it one. Women were still
trussed up in corsets in 1917 when Chanel began selling the
jerseys in her Deauville boutique, along with her wide-
legged “beach pyjamas” – inspired by sailors’ pants. Chanel
was a sailor herself. During her romance with the dashing
Duke of Westminster, she adored time spent off the Côte
d’Azur on his yacht, the Flying Cloud. So it’s fitting that
Chanel’s divine new fine jewellery collection inspired by
“the freshness of the Mediterranean breeze” and “the
endless shades of broad ocean expanses” takes the Flying
Cloud as its starting point. Could there be anything more
glamorous than sailing in these white-gold treasures set
with glinting diamonds, pearls and sapphires? Fly, be free.
