YEMEN
Married when she was eight, Nujood
Ali was 10 when she fled her abusive
husband, a man in his 30s. She
managed to take a taxi to the
courthouse in Sana’a to seek a
divorce. Nujood is pictured here with
her sister a few years later. “She was
feisty and very strong,’’ says Sinclair.
“I could see a stubborn streak in her
that both serves her well and
sometimes can get her into trouble.
After the book and documentaries
based on her story [were released],
Nujood became an international
heroine. Many girls followed suit, but
there is no safety net, no program for
these girls. It is very difficult.”
