Machine stitch back and
forth over the elastic a few
times within the binding
seam allowance to secure
it in place.21
Fold the binding over
and stitch it by hand
to the back of the mat.22
Remove any gathering
stitches that are
visible along the bottom of
the two garage pockets.23
Fold the two short
ends of the mat
towards the centre at aboutthe one-third line so they
overlap each other. Then
fold the mat in half so the
handles are on top of each
other. Bring the loop of
elastic over to the opposite
centre point and mark the
position to sew the button
on the backing. Nicole used
a novelty plane button, but
a round shank button is
probably easier for little
fi ngers to fasten.24
Load up the pockets
with some favourite
cars and the mat is ready for
