Country Style Australia — November 2017

(Amelia) #1
To make the most of its view over Sydney’s Pittwater, the
ensuite of this treetop bedroom was divided in two. With the
vanity and lavatory in a separate room, the freestanding
Catchpole and Rye tub was placed a discreet distance from
the windows looking out through a mature angophora.
“The ‘tree house’ is our magic spot,” says the owner. “All
my friends want to stay there, listening to the water lapping
and the possums scuttling under the tree. It grows through
the deck, giving the impression it’s part of the building.
It offers leafy shade in summer, and frames the view.”
The bathroom is an extension of the bedroom space and
the materials ref lect that. The shapely tub makes a statement
against the hardwood f loor and walls. “We went to a lot of
timber yards until we found some wood from a Queensland
bridge at a demolition site,” says architect Grant Cheyne.
The room was designed to offer a feeling of escape, and
the finishes and fittings are anything but basic. Behind the
tub is a Catchpole and Rye deck-mounted shower mixer,
and the main bathroom uses vanity, lavatory and tapware
from the same high-end English company.
