Michelle Carter Sentenced

On Aug. 3 a judge sentenced Michelle Carter to 15 months in

prison for urging her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to

kill himself. Carter was a 17-year-old high school student when

she sent thousands of texts to Roy, telling him to get into his

truck on July 12, 2014, and let a hose pump carbon monoxide

into the cab. Roy, who battled depression, tried to exit his truck

once it began to fill with fumes, but Carter called and ordered

him to get back inside. In announcing Carter’s conviction for

involuntary manslaughter, Judge

Lawrence Moniz said that Carter had

many chances to save Roy. “She did

nothing. She did not call the police or his

family,” Moniz said. “She didn’t issue a

simple additional instruction: ‘Get out of

the truck.’ ” Carter, now 20, won’t begin

serving her term until her pending appeal
