The actress, 53, transforms slums through

her Human Needs Project

While shooting the filmLost in Africain the slum of Kibera

in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2010, I discovered that all of these

wonderful people I was working with on the cast and crew

were living in dire need. I had to do something about it.

When they asked me if I would build a well for them, I didn’t

even hesitate to say yes. But then I started looking at how I

could do more to really affect change in their lives. That’s

how my cofounder David Warner and I came up with

Human Needs Project. Through the organization we built

a sustainable community center in Kibera where people

can access clean drinking water, sanitation, showers,

laundry, computers, high-speed Internet, event spaces and

art labs in one place. My next step is figuring out how I can

bring these centers to other slums aroundthe world. We’d

love for people to join us in saying that we care about the

nearly 1 billion people worldwide

who live in slums and deserve

access to opportunity.
