COMEDYGet Shorty,
like FX’sFargo, isn’t so
much a reboot as an enter-
taining revisiting-rethinking of well-known
source material, in this case the Elmore
Leonard bestseller that became a hit movie
in 1995. Chris O’Dowd plays Miles Daly, a
low-level enforcer sent from Nevada to Los
Angeles to collect a debt for his boss Amara
(Lidia Porto). The job doesn’t go well, but it
does deliver into his hands an unproduced
movie script,The Admiral’s Mistress. Miles
gets the green light, as they say in Hollywood,
to put the script into production—Amara
wants a new way to launder her money. (Her
only stipulation: The thing has to star John
Stamos.) Miles quickly finds a director, Rick
Moreweather (Ray Romano), who has less
cred as a moviemaker than Miles does as
a mobster. And so it goes: The Hollywood
dream casts such a soft glow over misery, ev-
