Guardians of
the Galaxy Vol. 2
More fun on the run—with Baby Groot on board
FANTASY Vol. 2, like
any decent space
adventure, populates the cosmos with exotic humanoid
species—some with blue skin, some with gold and one that
suggests a timid flight attendant with moth eyes. But this
franchise also likes to shoehorn in bits of pop culture that
only an Earthling would appreciate: The central story here
involves the 1972 AM radio staple “Brandy (You’re a Fine
Girl).” Chris Pratt is in good form as the goofball Star-Lord, but
the movie belongs to Baby Groot, the (literal) offshoot of Vin
Diesel’s stoic tree thing from the first film. He looks like the
Little Prince reincarnated as a whisk broom.

Atypical
COMEDYSam (Keir Gilchrist), a high school senior
on the autism spectrum, is ready to put himself
out there for romantic and even sexual adventures. But his inability to
fathom social clues can leave him stranded far from first base. On one date he
wears noise-canceling headphones and asks the girl if she’d be willing to give
up her cat (penguins he likes; cats, no). The comedy in this new series is never
at Sam’s expense—he’s painfully aware of the disconnect between his inner
feelings and his outer behavior—and often funny-sad in the same moment.
It’s also as verbally explicit as any Judd Apatow movie.(Launches Aug. 11)
