‘they just want to see him happy’.
‘All that Bert and Patti want
is to see Matthew at peace after
years of stress and heartache,’
says the source. ‘They’ve endured
11 years of hell since Matthew’s
high-profile scandals first went
public, and they feel like they can
finally put that difficult chapter
of their lives behind them.
‘They love Matthew and
they’ve seen the positive changes
that his relationship with Cat has
brought. He’s finally mellowed
out and just seems so happy
with his new life in New York.
‘They were
over the moon
when they
found out he
was engaged,
and they would
expect him to
have a quiet and
low-key wedding.
‘Besides, them flying over
there and being front and centre
at the wedding would cause an
enormous fuss and attention,
and that could be distressing for
Matthew. They’re excited just
to follow his pace on this one,
and be as involved in their
relationship as he wants.
‘But at the moment, they’re
just happy to see Matthew
healthy and happy after so much
turmoil over the years. If he’s
married in secret, that would be
a happy development for Bert
and Patti – this wedding news

Bert has made no secret of his
desire to see Matthew flourish
after years of battling drug
addiction and mental healthissues, which saw him arrested
for domestic violence and assault.
‘I have always prayed for
a happy ending, and I think it
has arrived,’ Bert recently said
of Matthew. ‘He’s happy, he is
doing good things, and that’s
the most important thing.
I’m overjoyed.’
Of Matthew’s engagement
to Cat, Bert told News Limited:
‘Patti and I are thrilled. We
love him as a son, and
this is the best thing we
could hope for.’
The growing wedding
speculation caps off a happy
few weeks for the adored
showbiz legend,
who recently
celebrated his
79th birthday
after a string
of troubling
health concerns.
The much-
loved Aussie entertainer was
hospitalised with illness back
in May, which forced him to miss
the Logies. But after making
a full recovery, he celebrated his
recent birthday with a large
group of friends and family.
‘When you’re 79, all you
need are friends and family
and good health,’ Patti
gushed, posting several
photos from the huge bash
on her Instagram page,
