T
he ‘gringe’ or grown-out
fringe is the ultimate
fuss-free style that
celebrities are embracing.
Laura Spinney, senior stylist
at Academie Salon, offers her
expert advice on how to make
this look work for you.
VERY VERSATILE
The gringe is popular because
it’s a non-committal fringe. It
requires length with a small
amount of layering throughout,
which keeps it versatile and easy
to change. When considering
a fringe, Laura recommends
looking to celebrities who share
a similar face shape as your own.
‘I love a good fringe and even
more so in the cooler months
with beanies, scarves and a cold
nose,’ adds Laura.
ACCESS ALL AGES
This style of fringe suits most
people, and a slightly off-centre
part will create a softer look. ‘It’s
perfect for mature ladies because
it’s less severe around the face
and isn’t too extreme for women
that don’t like the heaviness of
a full fringe,’ Laura notes.
KNOW HOW
‘My number-one easy tip is to
comb the hair down as soon as
you’ve washed it. Using a comb,
position the hair dryer behind
the fringe (coming from the
crown area blowing forward)
and direct all the hair to the
left, then the right, then
centred and repeat, repeat,
repeat,’ says Laura. Start
this using the cool setting on
your hair dryer, which will
allow your fringe to set.
TOOL TIME
Depending on your hair type,
a small iron is an easy and quick
tool to keep in the bathroom for
touch-ups. However, Laura
notes: ‘A blow dryer is generally
a must – unless you’ve been
blessed with perfect genetics –
and a heat protection spray, as
you will use more heat on your
fringe than the rest of your hair’.
Dry shampoo is always handy
to refresh during the day.
MUMS ON THE GO
Always know your own hair
type and texture. Seek advice
from your stylist and find out
what products and tools will suit
the amount of time that you
actually have each day to style
a fringe. ‘Mums are usually
sleep-deprived and the gringe
gives them something to hide
behind!’ says Laura.
