Shannons

record sale

In OBA 67we inadvertently mis-
credited the record sale for an
Australian motorcycle. The price of
Aust$600,000 for the FHA Harley-
Davidson racer was achieved by
Shannons in their September 2015
auction. Apologies to all concerned for
the slip up.

The event kicks off on Friday 1st December with
practice and qualifying with racing on Saturday and
Sunday. The theme this year is Superbikes of the ‘80s
and ‘90s featuring local specials, the big and brawny
‘80s superbikes through to WSBK style ‘90s bikes. An
extra feature will be the Biketranz North versus South
Challenge, with two 16-rider teams doing battle for a
trophy donated by Hugh Anderson. The meeting will
cater for everything from Vintage and pre-War right up
to the ‘nineties, plus Classic and Post Classic Sidecars,
with a lunchtime parade of champions and a Superbike
Feature Race on Sunday.
Special guests confirmed so far include Aaron Slight
who will be parading RC45 and NR750 Hondas, Andrew
Stroud who will parade Kevin Grant’s Britten, Graeme
Crosby parading a Cooley/Croz replica GS1000 and

Moriwaki Z, Robbie Phillis on a Katana, multi-time
NZ champ John Hepburn on the Steve Roberts Plastic
Fantastic Suzuki formerly ridden by Dave Hiscock, John
Boote and Hugh Anderson. More big names will be
confirmed closer to the event. There will also be static
displays and Motorcycle Mecca in Invercargill will be
bringing some of their collection up to display and
parade. Sunday will feature a two strokes-only feature
race with TZ Yamahas and RG and TR Suzukis. On
Saturday night, the popular BBQ will take place and
racing will conclude on Sunday by 3pm to allow for
presentation of trophies. There’s plenty of camping
available on site.

It’s Crump versus Crump next Easter

Three-times World Speedway Champion Jason Crump was a big hit at the 2017 Shannons Insurance
Broadford Bonanza, and told everyone that he thought it to be a wonderful event.
For 2018, Jason will be joined by another Crump – his equally famous father Phil, who finished third in the 1976
World Championships and was a leading British League and Test rider for Australia for many years. The speedway
side of the 2018 SIBBB will also see a celebration of the revolutionary Street 4-valve engine, on which Phil Crump
scored a sensational debut win in the 1975 Australian Championship. Although not the first 4-valve engine of the
modern era, the Street engine, developed by Neil Street and Ivan Tighe, dominated the world scene for two years
before the 4-valve Jawa took over.

Dynamic duo: Phil Crump (left) with Neil Street at the 1984 Australian Speedway
championships in Mildura, which Phil won with a 15-point maximum.
