at Mossgreen

A pair of Harley-Davidsonoutfits,
both 1939 U models with sidecars, will
go under the hammer at Mossgreen’s
auction at Motorclassica in Melbourne.
The bikes have an amazing history, a tale
of true family devotion. One of the pair,
with a black saddle, was bought new in
1939 by Great Uncle Jim. His nephew
Bill bought a brown saddle model in
1949 from a policeman in Bankstown
who had also bought that bike new. Jim
eventually left “Black Saddle” to Bill who
maintained both bikes lovingly.  Bill in
turn gave his two bikes to his two
nephews around 1995 when he decided
to hang up his leathers. Over the recent
22 years the two nephews have cared for
the bikes starting them regularly but
riding them only occasionally. As they are
not seasoned riders they are very keen to
see their bikes sold into suitable hands
who will see to their future maintenance.
These two sister bikes having been
together since 1949 and with their
endearing provenance will be sold at the
Motorclassica auction on 14 October at
the Royal Exhibition Building.

Bonhams Autumn Auction,to be held at Stafford, UK on 15th October, will feature a collection of bikes and
memorabilia offered by the family of Ivan Mauger, the 20th century’s most successful speedway rider, with nine
World Championships in Speedway and Long track, and more than 1,000 wins in international events in 26
countries. Up for auction will be the 2-valve Jawa on which he won the 1969 World title and the DOHC Jawa that he
rode to take the crown in 1977. There is also a 1964 Rotrax-JAP that Ivan rode to numerous successes, a 1972 Jawa
chassis which incorporates the engine he used to win the 1972 World Final, the 1971 World Long Track winning
Jawa, and a 1965 model ESO speedway bike that was presented to him by the Newcastle Diamonds team. There
is also a selection of trophies, helmets and other items associated with Mauger’s glittering career.

Manx Norton, who posted a lap of 110.054 mph – the fastest-ever lap
of the TT circuit by a single cylinder motorcycle.
Later the same day, Kiwi Bruce Anstey shattered lap and race records
to win the Lightweight Classic TT on a Honda RS250, setting the first-ever

H2 headlinesShannons auction results

A perfectly restored H2 Kawasakiwas expected to hit big bucks at Shannon’s
Winter 2017 Auction in Sydney on August 28, but the final hammer blow of $33,
stunned even seasoned buyers. There were several interested parties bidding for the
H2, including one from overseas,” said Shannons Auction Sales Advisor Stuart
Roberts. “It was an excellent result and I think both the vendor and buyer were well
pleased.” Owner Steve Ashkenazi, a noted collector and restorer who has had several
bikes featured in OBA, also did not leave the auction empty handed. “I bought a
1985 Yamaha RZ350 that I just couldn’t resist”, said Steve. “I have always loved these
and I raced one back in the day, and this was a near perfect example, completely
unmolested.” Smiles all round!
