20 time australian champion says goodBye
to the longest sponsorship deal
Every sport has its big names and in drag racing one of the
biggest is one of the quietest – and one of the nicest; Gary
Phillips, the unassuming dominator in the Alcohol ranks.
Some years ago we told you about him, after he won his
17th Australian Top Alcohol championship. Recently he made
that 20. Things are a little bit blurred about the status of the
championship between two rival series but we’ll leave that for
the “politicians” in the sport to argue over.
At the Winternationals in June, Gary grabbed the #
qualifying position with a 5.407 at an early shut off 260mph.
He explained, “We headed into the final event of the season
leading a close battle in the Pro Alcohol standings where four
of us could have claimed the championship.”
Gary was also competing in his Lucas Oils Studebaker Pro
Slammer (Top Doorslammer), both classes use essentially the
same engine and set-up but the sedans use suspension that
poses enormous additional challenges over the rigid funny
car chassis.
Gary’s 20th championship was also bittersweet with the
end of the team’s Lucas Oils major partnership, he continued,
“It’s been 20 wonderful years with the Lucas family. They
truly are a part of our own family, and I am eternally grateful
for the opportunity we were provided by Forrest, Charlotte
and Morgan, as well as the entire staff at Lucas Oil Products
both here in Australia and the USA. It is extremely sad for
us to say goodbye. We have had Lucas Oil on the side of our
cars for 16 of our 20 championships, countless event wins
and numerous record setting runs, their world class range of
products, we used, are second to none and they are one of
the biggest reasons for our success. A sincere thank you once
again for putting your trust in us.”
