mounted it under the floor of the boot with
two 3000cfm Spal fans. The exhaust is more
of Darren’s handiwork and uses a twin
three inch stainless system incorporating
Magnaflow mufflers. He also built his own
intercooler for the project. The transmission
is a column-shifted Ultra-Case Powerglide
and the diff is full-floating nine inch Detroit
Locker mounted on chrome moly four bars
and coil-overs. A carbon fibre tailshaft links
one to the other. A hand-fabricated 117 litre
tank is mounted behind the rear seat and
uses two Aeromotive Eliminator pumps
and handmade stainless lines to supply the
motor with fuel.
At the front end Darren used Jamco
tubular arms, Mustang spindles and a mix
and match of ’65 though to ’72 Mustang
pieces. Brakes are 355mm full-floating
rotors on the front with six spot calipers
and 330mm rotors with four spot calipers on
the rear, all plumbed to a Wilwood master
cylinder. The wheels are Boyd Coddington
Junkyard Dog rims, 18x10 inches on the rear
with 305 ET Street tyres and 18x8 inch front
rims with Pirelli Dragon rubber.
Since these photos were taken Darren has had the
upholstery redone in black vinyl tuck and roll with
perforated inserts. He wired the Mercury himself and
says this car is an ongoing project. Darren reckons
he’ll run with the vinyl for a few years and eventually
tear it all off and repaint the car properly, but for now
he says he is “wrapped” with the look of this thing.
Despite the outrageous driveline combination, he has
no plans to actually race the car. It’s just a wicked
street weapon and in his honest opinion, probably has
too much power for the street, but also says that it
sure is fun to drive. No doubt!
