FRONT YARD FIX

PAVE A PATHWAY
Lay pavers from the street
to the verandah to create
an entrance path, then paint
the driveway to match.

Gather your supplies

  • Road base

  • Paving sand

  • 400 x 400 x 40mm pavers

  • 600 x 400 x 40mm pavers
    (we used Adbri Eurostone in
    Riverina, Prague and Zurich)

  • Mortar mix

  • Powerloc jointing sand

You’ll also need
Shovel; straightedge; black
marking pen; demolition saw
(hired); rake; plate compactor
(hired); stringline; screed rails;
spirit level; timber float; brick
saw (hired) rubber mallet; broom;
wheelbarrow; small trowel

Here’s how
STEP 1 Using shovel (we used
a mini tractor) remove turf and
excavate soil so depth is 140mm
below finished height of pavers.
STEP 2 Using straightedge and
marking pen, draw a straight
line on uneven edge of existing
concrete driveway. Cut off edge
using demolition saw and remove.

STEP 3 Spread out 80mm
thick layer of road base slightly
wider than paved area. Use
plate compactor to compact
down to a depth of 70mm.
STEP 4 Spread 30mm thick layer
of paving sand over road base.
Set up a stringline to set straight
line for pavers at grass edge.
STEP 5 Use paver against
driveway to set level of paving
sand. Do as required to suit
length of screed rails. Make
tracks in sand between these
points with straightedge. Lay
screed rails in tracks flush with
level of paving sand. Repeat to
set screed rails on other side
of path level with the first.
STEP 6 Run straightedge along
screed rails to make paving
sand the correct level, removing
excess. At ends and edges of
path, use timber float to level
sand. Remove screed rails.
STEP 7 Lay a few pavers along
grass edge with stringline,
leaving a 2-3mm gap between
them. Fill in between these
pavers and driveway, laying in a
random pattern of colours and
sizes. Use brick saw to cut pavers
against driveway as required.
Use spirit level and rubber
mallet to bed pavers and make
level. Continue laying pavers
in this way along whole path.
STEP 8 Remove excess
roadbase and paving sand along
edge of pavers. Mix mortar in
wheelbarrow following product
instructions. Haunch edges
with trowel, spreading mortar
outwards at a 45° angle.
STEP 9 Sweep jointing sand
over pavers to fill gaps, removing
excess from top of pavers.
Spray lightly to activate polymer
binding agent in sand. (You can
also use fine, kiln-dried sand.) ➤

GARDEN TIP
For a lush green lawn
without waiting for grass
to grow, lay turf rolls.
Remove old grass and
level the area, spread
a layer of turf underlay
soil and rake to level.
Roll out the turf, using a
sharp spade to trim the
edges, then water in well.
