DAY 8 Disembark cruise &
Chengdu, May 10.
Disembark in Chongqing
and head to Ciqikou, an
ancient porcelain town, to
wander old alleyways dating
back to the Ming Dynasty.
Travel to Chengdu, to
enjoy Sichuan cuisine and a
performance of Sichuan Opera.
DAY 9 Meet the Pandas &
Fly to Xian, May 11.
Meet the pandas at Chengdu
Research Base of Giant Panda
Breeding. Visit the Chengdu
Shu Brocade and Embroidery
Museum, to learn about
Shu brocade hand weaving
and embroidery. Fly to Xian,
China’s ancient imperial
capital and once the starting
point of the famous ‘Silk
Road’. This evening features
a cultural performance dating
back to the Tang Dynasty.
Learn to make dumplings and
feast on a Shui Jiao dumpling
dinner, a specialty of the region.
DAY 10 Terracotta Warriors,
May 12.
Discover the Terracotta
Warriors, one of the most
significant archaeological
discoveries of the 20th
century. A life-sized terracotta
army of over 7,000 soldiers,
horses and chariots created
by Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s
workers, the ancient army
served to defend him in the
afterlife. Wander the pits and
observe the unique faces of
each soldier. Return to Xian
and walk atop the city wall.
DAY 11 Fly to Beijing,
May 13.
Explore the Little Wild Goose
Pagoda and the lively Muslim
Quarter. Fly to China’s capital
city, Beijing, which for millenia
has served as the centre for
many different ruling empires
and cultures of China.
DAY 12 Imperial Beijing,
May 14.
Stroll Tiananmen Square,
passing Chairman Mao’s
Mausoleum. Pass through
the gates of the Forbidden
City, the sacred centre of the
Chinese Empire and home to
both Ming and Qing dynasties.
Explore the Forbidden City,
the 15th-century Temple of
Heaven, a stunning example
of Ming Dynasty architecture.
This evening, relax and watch
a gravity-defying acrobatics
performance.
DAY 13 Champagne at the
Great Wall, May 15.
Stretching from the
Shanhaiguan Pass on the east
coast to the Gobi Desert in
the west, the Great Wall is
more than 5,000km long. Walk
along the wall, admire the
panoramic views and toast
your journey with a glass of
champagne. Return to Beijing
and unwind with a picnic lunch
in the grounds of the Summer
Palace, a retreat for emperors
during the Ming and Qing
dynasties. For a farewell
dinner this evening, sample
the renowned local delicacy,
Peking Duck.
DAYS 14-15 Depart Beijing
for Australia, May 16-17.
Transfer to the airport and fly
overnight to Australia, arriving
home the following day.
