You’ll also need

Tape measure; pencil;

straightedge; clamps; power

saw; sandpaper; square; drill; 4,

5 and 6.5mm drill bits; PVA glue;

50 and 25mm wood screws;

countersink bit; pine wood putty;

acrylic undercoat; Dulux Wash

& Wear Low Sheen Acrylic in Sir

Edmund (blue), Cuticle Pink and

Solution (wall); painting equipment;

satin water-based and oil-based

polyurethane; 100mm batten screws;

50mm stainless-steel decking screws;

sliding bevel; combination square;

57mm hole saw; jigsaw; trimmer

fitted with 6mm rounding-over bit

For you to note

• Cut plywood using straightedge
  clamped to plywood as a
  guide for your saw, with the
  blade on the cutting line.


• Sand components prior to
  assembly. All joins glued and
  screwed. Predrill and countersink
  all screws. Fill screw holes and sand
  smooth prior to clear coating.


• Undercoat and paint coloured
  components prior to assembly. Coat
  all units with clear polyurethane
  after assembly. On units with a back,
  clear coat prior to installing back.

Safety first

To prevent serious injury,

there are a few rules:

• There must be a rail all around the
  bed. Distance from mattress to top
  of rail should be at least 260mm.


• Any gaps in the bed must not
  fall within the following ranges:
  between 30 and 50mm, 95 and
  230mm or greater than 400mm.


• No parts must stick out
  more than 8mm as they can
  become snag points.

A Bookcase sides (4) 253 x

B Bookcase shelves (10) 235 x

STEP 1 Measure and mark bookcase
side (A) with positions of shelves
(B). Make 1 shelf flush with top end
then space following shelves 369mm
apart. Make bottom shelf 50mm
from other end. Drill 4mm clearance
holes through centre of each shelf
Repeat for other bookcase side.
STEP 2 Butt shelves into bookcase
side and join with 50mm screws.
Butt kickboard (C) into underside of

bottom shelf 50mm from front edge.

Screw through shelf and bookcase

side into kickboard. Place second

bookcase side against open end

of shelves and screw together.

STEP 3 On bookcase side that is

painted, spot prime putty then touch

up paintwork prior to clear coating.

STEP 4 Lay bookcase with face down

and position full back (D) on bookcase,

with coated face down. Align edges

with outside of bookcase to make

it square and screw together.

STEP 5 Repeat Steps 1–4 for second

bookcase. Use part back (E) on this

unit to make part of it open shelving.
