LANDSCAPE IDEAS

LAY OUT YOUR ZONES

Transform your landscape
with succulents and cacti

STEP 1: Prepare the area
If removing turf, make sure to
get rid of all grass roots to stop it
regenerating. Loosen the soil with
a garden fork first – it will make it
easier to dig out the turf and access
the roots. After removing turf, fork
over the area to loosen the surface.

STEP 2: Improve the soil
Succulents need well-drained soil
to thrive. Try raising garden beds
into mounds to let the water soak
in then drain away – this will also
save you excavating and bringing in
aggregate. Use equal parts garden
soil mix, compost and river sand.

STEP 3: Add the plants
Work out where to place your
new plants according to their
size, shape and structure. While
they establish, water plants when
the soil feels dry to touch and
liquid-feed occasionally with a
formulation for cacti and succulents.

STEP 4: Mulch the beds
Finish with mulch to protect the
plant roots. Choose a small-grade
river pebble, then use brown
deco granite for the pathways
to theme with the arid look.

Fill your outdoors with these sturdy beauties – they’ll give you
an impressive yet low-maintenance yard, even in the hot zones!
