REAL LIFE

Last issue, three beach shack owners recalled with fondness

their idyllic lives led in these NSW coastal communities. We

learned of the cabin’s rich histories and how they managed

to survive the threat of being torn down by authorities. Now

the owners open their doors to let us take a peek inside...

“I’ve been coming down to Era Beach
since I was young with my mum Joyce
Walmsley and dad Harry Walmsley.
“I now have eight grandchildren
ranging from seven to 18 and I feel
extremely fortunate that I can see the
pleasure my children and grandchildren
get from this gorgeous place, too.
“You feel like you’re part of this large
family because we have such a strong
community spirit with our neighbours.
As soon as you walk down the hill,
you know two thirds of the people and
you’ve seen their children grow up and
now they’re having babies! Being at Era
makes you feel like you’re all one big,
extended family.
“We have the best of what society
is all about here, wanting to be a part
of and connected to something. Now
my kids are in the Cabins Protection
League, which is the backbone of the
fighting force. The next generation is
starting to take over.”
