“After I fought in the Vietnam War,
Denise and I spent a lot of time down
at our shack in Little Garie. I inherited
it from my parents Phill and Glad. It was
wonderful to be back in that place again

  • it was healing. We even went there on
the night of our honeymoon, despite the
pouring rain. I’m still convinced Denise
only married me because I had the shack!
“We’re sugar cane farmers, so we have
six months of flat-out work and then
the other six months are for growing,
so we decided to spend the quiet half of
the year at the shack. There’s something
so special about Little Garie Beach –
it’s somewhere you can really unwind.

“There’s no elect we’re
self-sufficient. We just go out on the
verandah for a chat and a drink with
the neighbours, so there’s no need to
sit in front of the TV.
“We love to read, swim, fish and walk
on the beach. It’s so marvellous to have
the grandkids with us as they do the
same things we used to do. We value
the serenity and natural beauty of the
place – the waves, the sunrises and the
friendships. The sense of community
down here is just unbelievable. All those
years ago most of us were here doing the
same thing with our grandparents, and
now we’re carrying on that tradition.” •
