✚ Do they work outside?
Technologies that allow you to take
a personal alarm out of the house are
relatively new. Some now offer “geo-
fencing”, which can send the wearable
device’s GPS co-ordinates via SMS
to the pre-programmed emergency
contact if the wearer moves out of
a certain range. However, accuracy
drops if they’re in a large building.
For devices with a ho b
transmitter, Keith sugg
asking upfront about
its range.
“Many will say 300m
but realistically it’s
probably around
100m from the base
unit,” he says. “And
even if it works at
the neighbour’s
house, the ambulance
will be alerted to come
to the location of the b
unit, not next door.”

✚ Reliability and cost
The Australian Standard for personal
response systems requires at least
95 per cent of emergency alarms be
answered within two minutes, so check
that the unit you’re looking at complies.
Transmitters of home-based systems
have batteries that last for a year or
longer. Base units connect to mains
power but have battery back-up in case
f bl k s or power

. “As long as
there’s an
active phone
line, the
back-up
will still send
the call out,”
Keith says.
If you have
a monitored
ome security
rm, check
the security
y that the

medical alert device can operate while
sharing the same landline, as they could
interfere with each other.
Before buying an alarm, ask as many
questions as possible.
“Ask what will happen if the unit
stops working, how will you be notified
and how it will be serviced,” Joshua
says. “Find out what that cost includes
and whether you’re likely to be charged
for any additional items.”
So what’s the cost? “Auto-dialler
models start around $200, a monitored
one from $350, and wearable mobile
trackers start around $400,” Keith says.
“Monitoringstarts from $200 per year.”
