We spoke to some Catholic vegans and got their unique

perspective on how they celebrate Christmas.

Lorraine Fonseca, animal lover says “I’ve always liked to
commemorate the true meaning and spirit of Christmas over fancy
decorations and dinners. Now that I’m also vegan, I celebrate the
birth of Jesus with a vegan chocolate cake and some amazing
tofu and mushroom barbeque. Also, I have a little celebration by
feeding a couple of street dogs and having a happy Christmas. This
year I plan to have some delicious mock meat Goan dishes prepared
with jackfruit and soy meat.”

Mahafrine Powell, who is half Parsi and half Anglo-Indian celebrates
Christmas by making her traditional Christmas cake every year. Her
whole family, who have all turned vegan, gathers together every
year for a Christmas feast with a huge spread of vegan delights.
“Christmas is a time of goodwill and cheer. I cannot imagine having
the dismembered body parts of an innocent sentient being on my
Christmas table anymore.” say Ms Powell.

  1. Volunteer at a shelter

The true essence of this most popular Catholic festival
is about being kind-hearted, compassionate, generous
and giving back to those who may not be as fortunate
as we are. Along with your celebrations, we suggest
volunteering at a local animal shelter, or even donating
the money you would normally spend on a gift to
an NGO that provides medical support to animals.
Veganism is about compassion for animals so why not
embody that with the spirit of Christmas.

Finally, just have fun, there is no right or wrong way to
celebrate as long as you are conscious of the choices
you are making. Keep that in mind and enjoy the birth
of Jesus Christ in a cruelty-free way which we’re sure
He would approve of!
