INSIGHT

Christian’s personal photographer
Derek Cattani”.
Nola was well aware of copyright
provisions and contacted Derek
Cattani who, after observing examples
of some of Nola’s previous work,
kindly consented her to not only use
the images in the book but has also
granted her access to some other
previously unpublished images of
Christian. This demonstration is from
an image when Christian was only
10 or 11 months old. Nola felt both
humbled and thrilled that she has the
opportunity to reproduce a series of
this gorgeous animal.
The other handsome creature is
entitled “Dressed for Work” and is
the end result of her addictive habit
of snapping random photographs of
anything and everything at every
opportunity. An annual horse show
in her new hometown of Trafalgar
proved too much to resist. This
animal had great appeal and her
enthusiasm to paint him quickly
produced the result depicted.
Like other mediums Nola insists
that charcoal has no limit to the
range of suitable subjects. Many
artists use charcoal as their sketch
or blueprint and ultimately obliterate
the lines or drawing in whatever
medium they have chosen. She
readily admits that in many instances
she has relied on such a process
when she is working in pastel.
She suggests that next time you
produce a sketch or outline for a
painting, be a devil and keep on
working with your willow charcoal
or charcoal pencil. You might just
end up with a most satisfying or
prize winning work for the next art
show you enter. Like the promotion
on television once told us – “You’ll
never, never know if you...!”
