Beinginthemiddle of
whatis turningouttobe
arecord-breakingclassicracingseasonthere
is alwaysgoingtobetheoddclashortwo.
Butthisyearhasbeenextraordinary.
Onwhat turnedouttobeaglorious
weekendwiththeweather,hundreds,ifnot
thousandsofclassicraceenthusiastshada
toughchoicetomake,Te amWheelerbeing
amongthem.
Havingbeenbraveenoughtopickupthe
leaseforatroubledMalloryPark,whichfaced
closeronallegednoiseissues,StuartHicken
andEddieRoberts,whohasnowhanded
hisshareofthepartnershiptoStuart, have
doneafantastic jobofbringingthe‘Friendly
Circuit’ backtolife.
TheoldgirllookssmarterthanIcan
rememberin recenttimesandStuartandhis
teamcertainlyofferafriendlywelcome. And
whatTe amHickenhasalsodoneis picked
uptheeventletgobytheVMCCandmade
theMalloryBonanzawhatit wasalways
intendedtobe.
Assomeonestill involvedin organising
successfulmotorcycleevents,Iunderstand
betterthanmosthowtoughit is toavoid
majorclashes.Butthatweekendin earlyJuly
musthavebrokenallrecords.
Vyingforourattentionsaswellasthe
BonanzawastheHailwoodTributeat Castle
Combe,whichboastedagreatline-upoftop
machinesandriders, andtheCRMCvisitup
northtoCroft. It wasanimpossiblecall, but
asit turnedoutcircumstancesbeyondour
controlmadeourdecisioneasier.
WehadabrilliantweekendatMallory,
catchingupwithsomanyold racingfriends.
It alsotranspired,I’mdelightedtosay, that
theHailwoodsalutewasahugesuccess.And
noneofthistookanythingawayfroma
red-hotweekendof
racingatCroft.
Whenit comesto
classicsport, perhaps
youcanneverhave
toomuchofagood
thing.

Southern100 Racing
Clubpresident Derek
Nicholson passed
awayon July 8after
ashort illness.
Derekfirst
becameinvolved
withthe Southern
100in1974and
waselected to the
committee in November

1982, becoming chairmantwo
years later,aposition he held for
some18 years.
In 2002 Derekwaselected
president of Southern 100
Racing,apositionhe
heldfor 15 years.
He wasmade
alifemember
in 2010.

Mawdsley, has decided to hang-up his
microphone, having been‘the voiceofthe
friendly races’for 28 years.
Maurice tookupthe hot seat fromPeter
Kneale in 1988, the year thePre-TTClassic
Races were first run, with the SteamPacket
Road Races addedin 1991, as well asthe
feature event, the Southern10.His voice
soon becameintegral to the racesonthe
Billown Course.
