Forthis,the secondinour ongoingseriesof lineartdrawingsofgreat race bikes, we turn our attentionto the 1963 G50 Metisse.This particular modelwas an iconicmotorcyclesimply becausethis wasthe G50 that wasbanned bythe AMAbecausethe Americanofficaldomdeemeditwas‘notaproduction bike’.Thatdecisionled Matchlesstostartbuilding both
the roadlegal G50 CSR andtobeginselling theGengines to theRickmanBrothers.Whilst the RickmanBrotherswere well into theirswingoff-road-wise theystruggled to sell the framestheyweremaking to motorcycle manufacturers.From thiscametheirown ‘Metisse’bikes.This motorcycle herewassolandmarkforMatchlessthat it gave an immediatebirth to thecoming togetherofcomponentparts that gave theworld the 1964 MatchlessRickmanMetisse G50.The 1963 bikehad a90mmboreand 78mmstrokeand carriedthe company’s telescopicfront fork design.Goodfor around135mph,the G50 wasn’tquiteasquick as theNortoncompetition but theexquisite chassisallowedtalented riders to makeup thedifference.The G50 useda496ccsingle-cylinderoverhead-camlayoutthat went from49bhpin 1959,whenit first wenton sale,to52bhp in 1962. It stayed aroundthat output for 1963.Matchlesscouldtrace itsroutes all theway backto1899whenit started out puttingsmallmotors to bicycleframes,eventually making the firm’sfirst motorcyclein1902.In 1907 Charles Collier,
son of companyfounder HHCollier,tookthe win in the firstIsle of ManTT on aMatchlesssingle-cylinder machine.Thatraceaverage thenwasjust over38mph. Harry Collier,brother ofCharles,won the event in 1909.THEN
