DRIVING TIME SIGNS FOR PERTH

Perth drivers can now see real-
time estimates of journey times
on overhead electronic signs on
the main arterial routes north and
south of the city.
The live travel time estimates
on the Mitchell and Kwinana
Freeways aim to inform motorists
of traffi c conditions ahead and
reduce driver frustration.
The time estimates are
calculated using existing in-road
vehicle detection sensors and a
new smart technology system.
The installation should be good
news to about 300,000 drivers
who use the route every day.
WA transport minister Rita
Saffi oti says it’s a huge leap
forward in road infrastructure
that will be welcomed by drivers.
“In a fi rst for Perth, we are
using smart technology to

communicate freeway travel times
to motorists in real time,” she says.
“Displaying travel times will
reduce driver frustration by
providing motorists with a quick
understanding of the current road
conditions ahead and giving them
an estimated time of arrival to key
freeway exits.
“They are also able to make more
informed en-route travel choices by
being able to change their journey
based on the displayed travel times
that can be used as a guide.”
Every few minutes, the system
uses an algorithm that considers
distances and current average travel
speeds to estimate travel times,
which are then published on the
overhead electronic freeway signs
in real time. Current travel times will
automatically be displayed on nine
selected freeway signs during both

morning and afternoon peak
periods on weekdays, between 6am
to 10am and 3pm to 7pm.
The initiative aims to tackle
the problem of drivers having no
visibility of how traffi c is fl owing
or whether they should seek an
alternative route. This leads to
driver frustration because of the
uncertainty of how long a journey
will take.
The Kwinana and Mitchell
Freeways will also be widened, with
construction due to start next year.
