16 BOWLS INTERNATIONAL November 2017

TOURNAMENT EUROBOWLS

THE EUROPEAN BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
AT LES CREUX
The eleventh European Bowls Championships were hosted by Jersey
from 24 to 29 September, 2017.
It was actually the third time the largest of the Channel Islands has
staged the event, having previously done so in 1999 and 2001.
The Les Creux Bowls Club in St Brelade was again the venue for the
competition as it was 15 years ago.
As well as the home nations, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland,
bowlers from Guernsey, Isle of Man, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus, Germany,
Netherlands and Israel were joined by teams from fledgling
nations France, Switzerland and Hungary. Next time - in 2019, the
championships will be staged in Guernsey, where the very first
championships were held in 1997.

It was good to see Pauline
Biddlecombe, who has
encountered some health issues, in
Jersey in her role as EBU secretary,
which she has now relinquished. At
the EBU AGM, Ledbury's Don Pugh
took over as secretary, Dublin's
Brian Morton moved up as EBU
President, Wiltshire's Adie Lloyd
came in as Senior Vice President,
and Scotland's Bob Christie is the
new Junior Vice.
The next championships, in
2019, will be staged in Guernsey,
where they were first played in

  1. Talk of new countries adding
themselves to the list was rife. In
two years time, we could be seeing
    Austria, Belgium, Norway, Sweden,
Malta - and possibly even Iran.
And it is quite likely that Portugal,
who were missing this year, will be
    back in the fold.
A small criticism - this time
    concerning the format. Yes, I
know the final result is not the
be-all and end-all of this event.
As we have already agreed, it's all
    about development. But, if you
are going to give out medals in
a Closing Ceremony, the way in
which you award points and arrive

Wales won the mixed fours

at your ranking order has got to
be fair.
In Jersey, in the mixed fours
(and also in the men's and
women's pairs) everyone played
seven matches. Because there
are 16 countries involved, there
are eight teams that you DON'T
play. Therefore, the statistics
that read like this - Played - Won

  • Lost - Sets Won - Shots Scored

  • Shots Conceded - do not mean
very much, because you are not
    comparing like with like.
The solution? - Two groups of
    eight. This would mean seven
matches in each group. That way,
you end up with two winners, fair
and square. These can then meet
    in a final.
I have heard it said that the EBU
    organisers want to give everyone
as much time as possible on
the green, and that the weaker
countries would not want to watch
    a final.
    I understand where they are
coming from. However, I do believe
they would learn a lot by watching
a final between two teams of
    world-class players - and that
the sense of occasion would be
    enhanced.
