Bowls International — November 2017

(nextflipdebug5) #1

I

T is such a shame when a small
minority of people strive to do
their utmost to spoil things for
everyone else.
I am talking about archaic mindsets
that keep clubs just ticking over rather
than allowing them to grow and
flourish, simply because it suits a
select few.
How many times can the phrase
'that's the way it has always been' be
trotted out before people stand up and
fight for what they believe in?
The attitude that some bowlers have
about how their clubs should be run,
and it is unfortunately normally those
who wield a bit of power, will see them
losing multiple members if they are
allowed to continue.
If forward thinking policies are not
adopted there simply will not be a
game down the line.
What saddens me most is that this
fact does not seem to occur to some
people, and if it has then they do not
care.
I have come across too many who
only look at the here and now, after all,
what will it matter once they are gone?
These views are killing our sport.

There are thousands of volunteers
who are doing a tremendous job for
bowls and for bowlers.
It might be the way of the world
that there is no gratitude much of the
time yet people fall over themselves
to inform you when you have made a
mistake or failed to do something, but
please keep doing what you are doing.
For those of you who are going along
with things for fear of losing a place in
a team or falling out with the 'in crowd'
at your club, please stop and think.
Would you allow some of the things
that are going on in clubs to happen
in your workplace? Would you let
your children be bullied in to a corner
without standing up for themselves?
Lead by example. If something is
wrong or unjust then do something
about it, or at the very least seek advice
from your national governing body
who will only be too willing to assist-
just remember-they need information
to act.
