How the Algarve continues to flourish
more than 50 years after golf began there
For golf in the Algarve, 2017 has been ‘The
First Day of the Rest of its Life’. Last year
marked the 50th anniversary of thefi rst golf
course opening in the sun-drenched southern
region of Portugal, but the area has certainly
not rested on its laurels. Instead it has
embraced the famous Charles Dederich
saying by forgetting about its past success
and looked ahead with purpose and energy.
So, 2017 has built with outstanding success
on the 50-year celebration of golf being
played in Europe’s best-loved destination.
Although visitor numbers hit a record high
in 2016 – up a staggering 10% to almost 1.3m
on the previous year – in the fi rst half of 2017
they grew higher, up 6% on the previous year.
