THE INSIDER’S GUIDE TO...


he first tee on the West Course at La
Manga Club makes you think. I
mean, really think. I’d been told this
wasn’t a grip-it-and-rip-it kind of course, one
of three layouts at the iconic Spanish resort.

But as I look down the fairway, with 306 yards
to the flag and my laser telling me there’s
water at 180, I’m forced to put the wood away
and opt for a 7-iron. A 7-iron, on a par-4 tee!
A gentle bunt down the middle, a 120-yard

wedge to six feet and an opening birdie
follows – it’s a surprisingly pleasing
introduction to my first visit to La Manga, a
sentiment that’s echoed throughout our stay.
My perception of La Manga Club was that
