Turn to page 28
couple of years ago I took part in the MacMillan Longest Day
Challenge – 72 holes in 24 hours, raising money for a brilliant cause.
It rained a bit, I walked around 20 miles (at least I had a Motocaddy),
lost 10 balls (thanks, Srixon!) and raised about £300. It’s a great way to do
something different on the course, and help a very worthwhile cause in the
process; I’d urge every golfer to look at doing it in 2018.
But my effort pales into insignificance compared to another charity trek
that’s just finished (and one we’ve got the full low-down about, including
some incredible pictures, on page 64).
Adam Rolston and his caddie, Ron Rutland (below), have just completed a
1,200-mile “hole” stretching west to east across Mongolia. In setting a new
Guinness World Record for the longest hole ever played, the pair lost 135
balls, rode a camel, battled -30°C temperatures and adopted a stray dog...
Rolston told TG: “I ended up taking just over 20,000 shots and we raised
$20,000, so it worked out at around a dollar a shot. We set the par at 14,
and based it on me
hitting full 8-irons
across the country,
which was a bit
stupid. We didn’t really
factor in the ball
finding a muddy lie or a
rocky crevice, so I was 6,
shots over par! But apart from that,
there’s nothing I regret from the
trip at all. There were times when
we were naive in what we were
trying to accomplish at the
beginning, but we knuckled
down and got it done.”
