Dolphin Digest — October 2017

(vip2019) #1
Dolphins record:4-
This time last year: 2-
Time of game: 3:
The big story: Let’s just call them the
“Comeback Kids.” For the second week
in the row, the Dolphins stared defeat
right in the face and came up off the can-
vas to steal another win. This time,
Miami trailed the Jets 28-14 entering the
fourth quarter but backup quarterback
Matt Moore, who replaced Jay Cutler
when Cutler was injured early in the
third quarter, was brilliant, completing
13 of 21 passes for 188 yards and a pair
of fourth-quarter touchdown passes to
Kenny Stills, the second one from 2
yards to ti the game at 28-28 with 6:
left.
Play to remember: With the Dol-
phins having already battled back to
tie the game and the Jets with the ball
at their own 15 and 47 seconds left in
regulation, quarterback Jake McCown
dropped back and, in the face of fierce
pressure led by Charles Harris, under-
threw his receiver and cornerback
Bobby McCain picked it off to set up
the game-winning field goal.
Play to forget: Late in the first quarter,
the Jets were in a seemlingly hopeless
third-and-19 at their own 30 when Mc-
Cown tossed a screen pass, normally a
give-up down, to Matt Forte. But, thanks
to a slew of missed tackles, Forte man-
aged to turn it into a 21-yard gain. Three
plays later, McCown hit Robby Ander-
son for an 18-yard touchdown and 14-
Jets lead.
Turning point: After falling behind 28-
14, the Dolphins had an ugly three-and-
out, giving the ball back to the Jets early
in the fourth quarter. But the Miami de-
fense came up big, pushing the Jets back
from their own 17 to the 8 to force a punt
from their own end zone, resulting in
good field position. Moore then drove
the team 42 yards in just four plays, hit-
ting Stills for a 28-yard score to slice the
deficit to seven and give the team the
momentum it needed to complete an-
other comeback win.
It was over when: After McCain’s
interception set the Dolphins up at the
Jets 27, the Jets burned all three time-
outs to try to save some time for their
offense, but placekicker Cody Parkey
came in and coolly nailed a 39-yard
field goal with 26 seconds left for the
game-winner.

JETS

  • The Dolphins have now won 13 of their past 17 regular season
games. Their 13-4 mark in their past 17 games is the third-best record in
the NFL behind Kansas City (14-3) and New England (14-3). The last
time Miami won 13 of 17 regular season games was from Oct. 28, 2001
    to Oct. 13, 2002.

  • In addition to Jay Cutler leaving the game because of a chest injury,
tackle Laremy Tunsil (knee) and defensive end Andre Branch (groin) also
left the game in the third quarter and did not return.

  • The Dolphins have won nine of their past 11 games played at Hard
Rock Stadium. It is the team’s best home stretch since they won 11 of 12
    from Sept. 23, 2001 to Oct. 6, 2002.

  • The Dolphins defense held their opponents to seven points or less in
the second half in three straight games, all wins. Miami’s defense allowed
the Jets to gain just 81 yards in the second half and forced two turnovers,
marking the third straight game the Dolphins have held their opponents
to less than 110 yards in the second half.

  • QB Matt Moore engineered the fifth fourth-quarter comeback of his

career against the Jets. The 14-point fourth-quarter deficit was the largest
comeback victory of his career. His previous largest comeback was down
seven points (trailing 20-13 to winning 23-20) against San Francisco on
Oct. 24, 2010.

  • DE Cameron Wake had 2.5 sacks. It’s the most sacks he’s had in a
game since Oct. 18, 2015 at Tennessee when he had four. Wake is now the
NFL’s leader in sacks (87.5) since he entered the league in 2009 and ranks
No. 2 in team history with 87.5 career sacks.

  • TE Anthony Fasano caught his first touchdown since he returned to
Miami, a 4-yard pass from QB Jay Cutler. It was Fasano’s first touch-
down reception for the Dolphins since Dec. 16, 2012 vs. Jacksonville.

  • WR DeVante Parker missed his second consecutive game because
    of an ankle injury.

  • Center Mike Pouncey was in the starting lineup, one week after leav-
ing the Atlanta game in the first half because of a concussion.

  • Jermon Bushrod served as game captain, joining season captains
Pouncey, Kenny Stills, Ndamukong Suh, Cam Wake and Michael Thomas.
