Where Seabirds Find Food


A penguin jumps into the foaming sea to gather food after a spell ashore
on the Falklands, and swims hundreds of kilometres before returning.
An albatross embarks on a loop of thousands of kilometres, “scour[ing]
the ashes of the sea where Capricorn and Zero cross”,* before relieving
its mate waiting stoically ashore on the egg on South Georgia. During
these trips, the birds feed. That much is a statement of the obvious. The
question is where. Do they feed along the entire route whenever and
wherever swarming krill or choice floating morsels are encountered? Or
