Far From Land The Mysterious Lives of Seabirds

(vip2019) #1

MAP 3. The remarkable migration tracks of 11 Arctic Terns tracked via geolocators from
breeding colonies in Greenland (10 birds) and Iceland (1 bird). Green = autumn (post-
breeding) migration (August– November), red = winter range (December– March), and
yellow = spring (return) migration (April– May). Two southbound migration routes were
adopted in the South Atlantic, either (A) following the West African coast (7 birds) or
(B) following the Brazilian coast (4 birds). Dotted lines link locations either side of the
equinoxes when geolocator information is unreliable. See page 55. Map reproduced, with
permission from Carsten Egevang.

2013 and 2014, respectively, visiting or breeding at the colony on Skomer Island, Wales,
indicated by the star. Note how adults mostly go north, or west to waters off southern
