Far From Land The Mysterious Lives of Seabirds

(vip2019) #1

MAP 5. Map showing the foraging trip, lasting almost 15 days, of a male Northern Ful-
mar GPS- tracked from Eynhallow, Orkney, to the Mid- Atlantic Ridge and back. The
map shows periods of night (dark circles) and light (white circles) on a bathymetric chart
(darker colours indicate deeper water). Seven circles show portions of the journey when
the flight path was more convoluted, indicative of feeding. See page 96. Re- drawn, from
the work cited in Note 14, Chapter 5.

MAP 6. Gannets tracked from colonies around the British Isles forage in largely mutually
exclusive areas, despite their potential home ranges overlapping. The left- hand map shows
study colonies (red) and others (yellow); the size of dots indicates colony size. The right-
hand map shows the near- exclusivity of the different colonies’ foraging areas. Little Skellig
(SK), Bull Rock (TB) and SK (St Kilda) are colonies mentioned in the text. See page 106.
