Section V
Medical Management of Cruciate
Ligament Rupture
Introduction
Although several new nonsteroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs have entered the veteri-
nary market over the past several years, a
limited number of different types of drug are
available for the treatment of stifle osteoarthri-
tis. In contrast, a plethora of nutritional
supplements are available, although evidence
of clinical efficacy for many nutritional sup-
plements is limited. Physical therapy has an
important role in the management of dogs
with cruciate ligament rupture. There is grow-
ing evidence that appropriate rehabilitation
after surgical treatment of the stifle can have
important benefits to patient mobility.
This section provides a detailed discussion of
current medical therapies commonly used for
the treatment of dogs with the cruciate ligament
rupture.
