The greatest barrier to the development of a
disease-modifying therapy for CR in dogs is
the lack of a specific therapeutic target. Until
the underlying pathogenesis that leads to CR in
client-owned dogs is comprehensively under-
stood, development of an effective interven-
tional therapy will likely remain unattainable.
Canine CR typically has a non-contact mech-
anism, and has a substantial genetic contribu-
tion (Nielenet al. 2001; Wilkeet al. 2006; Baker
et al. 2017) (see Chapter 7). Further studies to
investigate the genetic contribution to CR in
dogs promises identification a biological net-
work that can be targeted for drug develop-
ment, and is likely the most promising means
for the development of an effective disease-
modifying therapy.
