• Keepa clean camp. Bears have ex-
  tremelykeennosesandwillfindyour
  camp,especiallyif thereareanylinger-
  ingfoododors.


• Storeandcookyourfoodat least 100
  yardsfromwhereyouplanto sleep.


• Donotsleepinthesameclothesthat
  youworewhilecooking.


• Hangyourfoodandtoiletriesat least
  10-feethigh,andfourfeetfromany
  treea bearcanclimb.

Followtheseprecautionsif you

aresuccessful:

• Bepreparedtotakecareof yourelk,
  workingswiftlyonphotographsand
  breakingtheanimaldownandbagging
  upthemeat.


• Buddyupif possible,withoneguy
  workingwhiletheotherholdselklegs
  andlooksforbears.


• Before packing outthe first loadof
  meat,moveeverythingthatyouplanto
  packoutat least 100 yardsawayfromthe
  carcass,andhangit in a treeif possible.


• Besuretohangthemeatwhereyou
  canlookit overfroma distanceto seeif
  ithasbeendisturbed.If possible,tryto
  seethecarcassas well.Besidesa mama
  bearprotectinghercubs,thereprobably
  isn’t asituationmoredangerous than
  surprisinga bearprotectinga carcass.


• Ifabearfindsyourelkbeforeyou
  door hasfoundyourmeatcache,just
  silentlybackoutandwalkaway.You
  lostyourmeat.It is notworththerisk
  oftryingtorunthebearoff(illegalin
  Wyoming) —theelknowbelongs to
  thebear.Comebackinabouta weekif
  youwantto retrievetheantlers.
