&FishDepartment.Evenif thereareno
signsposted,pleaseheedthefollowing
precautionsaroundcamp:
- Keepa clean camp. Bears have ex-
tremelykeennosesandwillfindyour
camp,especiallyif thereareanylinger-
ingfoododors. - Storeandcookyourfoodat least 100
yardsfromwhereyouplanto sleep. - Donotsleepinthesameclothesthat
youworewhilecooking. - Hangyourfoodandtoiletriesat least
10-feethigh,andfourfeetfromany
treea bearcanclimb.
Followtheseprecautionsif you
aresuccessful:
- Bepreparedtotakecareof yourelk,
workingswiftlyonphotographsand
breakingtheanimaldownandbagging
upthemeat. - Buddyupif possible,withoneguy
workingwhiletheotherholdselklegs
andlooksforbears. - Before packing outthe first loadof
meat,moveeverythingthatyouplanto
packoutat least 100 yardsawayfromthe
carcass,andhangit in a treeif possible. - Besuretohangthemeatwhereyou
canlookit overfroma distanceto seeif
ithasbeendisturbed.If possible,tryto
seethecarcassas well.Besidesa mama
bearprotectinghercubs,thereprobably
isn’t asituationmoredangerous than
surprisinga bearprotectinga carcass. - Ifabearfindsyourelkbeforeyou
door hasfoundyourmeatcache,just
silentlybackoutandwalkaway.You
lostyourmeat.It is notworththerisk
oftryingtorunthebearoff(illegalin
Wyoming) —theelknowbelongs to
thebear.Comebackinabouta weekif
youwantto retrievetheantlers.
