and controls odors. It’s covered in HID3
camo, a proprietary pattern that looks
good in high-elevation mountain basins
as well as deciduous whitetail haunts.
First Lite (firstlite.com) has been a
respected player in the Western hunt-
ing scene for a while, and with clothing
like the Brooks Down Sweater ($265),

it’s easy to see why. This insulating layer
tips the scales at around 11 oz., meaning
that its weight-to-warmth ratio is off the
charts. It also can function as an outer
layer if you opt for the Fusion or Cipher
camouflage patterns.
While some apparel companies stick
to their own proprietary patterns, oth-
ers magnify their brands via key part-
nerships with industry powerhouses
like Mossy Oak (mossyoak.com).
When it comes to Mossy Oak, look no
further than the Browning BT U-W D
Parka (browning.com/$300), which

is covered in Break-Up Country. This
3-in-1 parka is built with a fully water
and windproof outer shell, and a de-
tachable insulated liner jacket. It also
has a safety harness access port, and
multiple zippered pockets.
ScentLok (scentlok.com) also cov-
ers their apparel in Mossy Oak Break-
Up Country. Their latest, the Savanna
Reign Early Season Jacket ($13 0 –$15 0) i s

designed with a NeverWet coating, a
safety harness port, and Carbon Alloy
Technology to promote odor adsorption.
Last but certainly not least is a com-
pany that has perhaps fooled as many
turkeys and deer as anybody — Real-
tree (realtree.com). Their EDGE pattern,
which debuted in 2018 and can be found
on countless garments, like the new
Element Outdoors (elementoutdoors.
com) Drive Series 1 ⁄4 Zip Performance
Shirt ($60). Ideal by itself or layered, this

lightweight, polyester interlock 1/4 Zip
breathes well and will keep you dry and
comfortable. The shirt’s Silver-Cloak
antimicrobial treatment will be another
big plus when it comes to scent control,
but that’s a topic for another column.
