packingmy bulloutthatday.Ronepito-
mizeswhata huntingpartnershouldbe.
Wehadcamptorndownin no time,and
wewerebothheadedhometo ourfami-
liesby midafternoon.
Asexcitedas I wasto spendtimewith
myfamily,thenine-dayKansasprong-
hornseasonstartedjusttwodayslater.
Blessedwithanunderstandingwife,I
was soonspendingeveryfreemoment
afield,andwithlittletoshowformy ef-
forts.The seasoncoincideswiththerut,
sousingdecoysis my preferredtactic,
but thefewanimalsI locatedweren’tre-
sponding.
Thefinalweekendof theseasonI
huntedwithmybuddyMattandmy
brother-in-lawJordan.Myluck—or
lack thereof—persisted,so afterseveral
hourswe splitup to searchforbucksthat
wereaggressivelyprotectingtheirha-
rems.Latethatafternoon,Mattlocateda
buckin a situationthatpiquedourinter-est,so we deviseda planto approachthe
herdfromoppositedirectionsinhopes
that oneof us wouldgettheherdbuckto
chargethedecoy.
