My child has very recently
been diagnosed with type 1
and I am still in shock. How
did you cope when finding
out that your child had been
diagnosed with diabetes?
Elissa says: As a parent,
I was absolutely devastated
at first, but luckily, with
my family, their father
already had type 1, so we
were in a more fortunate
position with already
understanding the ins and
outs of managing diabetes.
In saying this, it still took me
six weeks to come to terms
with the diagnosis. After
each of my four children
were diagnosed I felt the
same sadness and despair.
I think it’s very normal
to feel this way and, after
allowing some time to
grieve, I would then pick
myself up as I believe
positivity is the only way.
I knew this was something
my kids were going to have
to live with forever, so it was
up to me to be as positive
and encouraging as possible,
which would help them
accept and adjust to their
new way of living.
