My doctor says I should
change my insulin to a new
type that is now available
in Australia, even though
my blood glucose levels
are okay. Why?
Sultan says: There are two
new types of insulin in
Australia that your doctor
may want you to try, Toujeo
and Ryzodeg 70/30.
Toujeo is a long-acting
insulin and is a more
concentrated form of
Lantus that, due to some
modifications, lasts longer
in the body.
Ryzodeg 70/30 is a
combination of quick and
slow insulin, like Mixtard
30/70 or NovoMix 30.
Both of these insulins
are a good option,
particularly if you are
experiencing low blood
glucose levels or are at
risk of having a hypo.
Both reduce the risk
of having a low sugar
significantly compared
with older treatments.
My view is that it is
a bit like a new safety
feature available on a car
- anything that makes
managing diabetes safer
and easier sounds like
a great idea to me.
