NO PEACE
FOR OLD MEN
Peace on the Prairie Horizon
From memory artist Alfred Jacob Miller painted this placid
circa 1830s scene of the old Sublette fur trading post, which
preceded Fort Laramie (in present-day southeast Wyoming).
In the 1850s Lone Horn and other Plains Indian chiefs
maintained and enforced a fragile peace
—till shattered by a seemingly random murder
