‘Mi Amigo’

I

t’s been quite a busy
few weeks in the
SAM oice, with both
David and I settling into
our new roles. Also, on
behalf of both of us can I
thank you for the positive
comments that we have
received, and we are working hard
to bring you the very best articles
and features as we move forward.
Over the next issues we will be
adding in more reference material
to go alongside our features, plus
we now have a regular series
of colour proiles every month,
which we hope you will enjoy. On
the cover of this issue is the iconic
B-17 ‘Flying Fortress’, shown on
a daylight raid over Germany,
with one engine on ire, but still
pressing home its attack. This
image is very poignant here
in the UK as we have recently
witnessed a touching story of a
Sheield man, Tony Foulds, now
aged 85 who tended the site of
a B-17 crash, having witnessed
the demise of the bomber at

the age of eight. He
recalled that he saw
the aircraft circling,
and the pilot waving to him and
his friends. Thinking the pilot
was waving back, they stayed
and watched as the B-17 limped
over some trees and crashed in
lames killing all on board. Only
later did he realise the pilot was
not waving back to him and his
friends, but waving to tell them to
get out of the way, and that he had
actually crashed trying to avoid
them. His mark of respect and
thanks to the crew of ‘Mi Amigo’
was to look after a memorial to
their names. His earnest desire
was that to commemorate the
75th anniversary of the crash,
that a lypast could be organised.

He got his wish when elements
of the USAF and RAF honoured
the fallen crew as they overlew
the memorial in salute, with
Lakenheath-based Strike
Eagles lying the ‘missing man’
formation. A touching story, and
a tribute to not only the crew of
‘Mi Amigo’, but to all who lew
in World War II and gave their
lives for our freedom. So, without
further ado, we hope you enjoy
all we have for you this month!
