of bendingbacktothesoil.They’re
perfectlyedible,butlessappealingon
theplate.So,whydotheybend?
Oncespearsstarttogrow,theydoso
quiterapidly.Theyarealsosensitiveto
injuryfrominsects,frostdamage,
knockingwhenweedingnearby,or
evenwind-blownsandorgrit.The
injuredpartsgrowslowly,whilerapid
growthontheoppositesidecausesthe
shootstobendtowardstheinjuredside.
Avoidcultivatingthegroundcloseto
thecrowns.Controlanyinsectpests.
Andif yourgardenis coldorexposed,
applya lightfleeceonnightswithfrost
forecast,andpreventsandblasting
damagebyerectinga windbreak
during the harvesting period.
