Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was feted by the Royal Navy and a fl eet
of well-wishers when he and Suhaili recreated their triumphant
entry into Falmouth to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their
Golden Globe circumnavigation on 22 April.
The yacht and her legendary skipper both looked a good deal
more kempt than when he stepped ashore at the Royal Cornwall
Yacht Club in 1969, after 312 days at sea. Indeed Suhaili made a fi ne
show at the head of the fl eet, and Sir Robin’s dapper get-up was
in marked contrast to the fi sherman’s sweater he wore for that
famed Golden Globe race landfall.
As the clock struck 3.25pm – the precise time he crossed the fi nish
line 50 years previously – the warship HMS Mersey and all the yachts
sounded their horns in salute to the man who not only inspired the
nation but also the world.
Among the many supporters helping re-create Sir Robin’s moment
were family members and sailing comrades from across the decades,
as well as local well-wishers who were there in 1969.
“Today has just felt like a fantastic display for my sport," Sir Robin
said. "I looked around and was so proud to see so many people out
enjoying the day with me. I feel truly honoured.”
The beautiful 58ft Herreshoff ketch
Arrluuk won overall honours at the
prestigious concours d'elegance
which takes place annually at the
Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.
Arrluuk also won the Classic Class
(Privately Maintained), much to
the delight of owner/skipper Steve
Frary. We'll have a full Antigua
Classics report in CB next month.
